Bede's victorious U16 Sussex Hockey champions
Bede’s Junior Boys’ Hockey U16 squad became Sussex champions on Thursday 9 February.
The team started the Sussex County Championship finals, hosted at Bede’s Senior School in Upper Dicker, with a 2-0 victory against Hurst that set the tone for the day and placed them top of the group. The next match against Seaford College saw Bede’s down 2-0 at half time, but coming back to win the game 3-2, scoring the winning goal in the last minute of the match.
Bede’s faced Steyning in their final group game, which following a hat trick from captain Thomas Gordon, set them up to meet Eastbourne College in the semi-final. Having gone 1-0 up inside 30 seconds, from an Alistair Orr backhand strike, things were going well.
Eastbourne however levelled late in the first half and the game ended 1-1, which took the game to penalties. With goalkeeper Sam Leonard brilliantly saving 3 out of 4 Eastbourne penalties, Bede’s headed through to the final.
The final against Hurst was a tightly fought affair, and, with the score 1-1 at full time, the game again headed to penalties to decide the winner. With the score at 4-4 after the first barrage of 5, the competition went to sudden death. It took two further rounds of penalties before Sam Leonard pulled off a diving save to secure the championship for Bede’s.
Bede’s now progress to the Regional rounds after the half-term break.
