Bede’s School tennis team have made a very strong start to the summer season with the Boys Under 18 and Under 16 teams both unbeaten in all matches played in the Sussex Independent Schools League, against Eastbourne College, Brighton College, Lancing College, Hurst, Worth, Ardingly and Christ’s Hospital. Between them the two teams have dropped just three sets out of the 72 played. Bede’s has also won the Boys and Girls Sussex Schools Shield, which includes all schools throughout Sussex.
The younger players have also made a good start with the Under 15 Boys and Girls also remaining unbeaten in the Aegon Sussex League.
At a national level the Bede’s teams are also making good progress and are now through to the semi-finals of the Glanville Cup qualifying stage , in which the Bede’s A team will play Bede’s B team. The winning team will meet Sevenoaks in the final round of qualifying with the winner of that match going through to compete in the National Schools Cup finals.
The Girls are through to the final of the Aberdare Cup qualifying stage, having beaten Lancing College and are just one match away from qualifying for the National Schools Cup finals which will be held in Nottingham in July.
Commenting on the teams’ performances, Bede’s Director of Tennis, Julie Salmon said, “We have known for some time that we have a really special group of players at Bede’s but what is also so pleasing to see is that the new younger players who have joined the squad are also making their mark. We have got some tough matches to come – particularly in qualifying for the Nationals – but I know all the players will bring their best to every match and everyone in the team really relishes the challenge.”
