Building Heroes at Chichester CollegeMay 19, 2016
Building Heroes, an armed forces charity based in West Sussex, has joined forces with the college to provide a foundation property maintenance course at Brinsbury, near Pulborough, which will give skills training to military veterans.
Designed specifically for and funded by Building Heroes, the intensive five week, residential course will provide the veterans with a range of skills to enable them to pursue a new career in the construction industry.
The first group of five veterans to take the course arrived at Brinsbury on Monday (16 May) and will be welcomed with a special event on Thursday to celebrate the launch.
The group, from across Britain, varies in age and includes people from a range of backgrounds who have left the Armed Forces for many different reasons – from medical discharges to retirement.
Brendan Williams, Chief Executive of Building Heroes, said: “The collaboration between Building Heroes and Chichester College creates a flexible model which enables us to use the facilities, skills and expertise available at the Brinsbury Campus.
“Alongside the technical skills they will learn, the trainees will also be provided with support and guidance to gain employment or continue into self-employment, according to their needs and aspirations.
“We are aiming to create a model which can be replicated around the country which we hope in time will enable hundreds of military veterans access our services.”
Shelagh Legrave OBE, Principal at Chichester College, added: “We are delighted to be able to work with Building Heroes to be able to offer military veterans a chance to learn new skills and develop their existing ones.
“I have served in the Armed Forces and it is extremely important to me that our veterans have the opportunity to get the education and support they need to gain a career after they have left the military.
“We look forward to welcoming Building Heroes and their trainees to our Brinsbury Campus.”
The Foundation in Property Maintenance course is free for all veterans and provides them with a range of skills to enable them to pursue a new career.
