Hurst College first time challenge champions

February 8, 2018

The Hurst College team emerged victorious in the Schools’ Challenge South Central Regional Championships for the first time in the school’s history.

The Hurst team took a while to get going as they lost their first match against Hampton School. They bounced back to convincingly beat Lady Eleanor Holles School in the next game, and advanced to the semi-finals as the highest-scoring group runners-up.

A tight semi-final against last year’s winners Kingston Grammar went right down to the wire, but a combination of astute interruptions to starter questions and some excellent team work with the bonus questions meant the Hurst team ran out as winners by 490-430.

The final was against tournament stalwarts RGS Guildford. By this stage the team were really into their stride and were ahead for most of the match, eventually completing a 720-600 point victory that made the six-hour round trip well worth the effort.

Hurst will now progress to the inter-regional play-off against the South West winner, and the winners of this contest will progress to the National Finals in April.
