A relevant education providing students with skills for life in a state-of-the-art modern setting is what Sussex Coast College Hastings (SCCH) offers.
Set over three sites in the heart of Hastings, the inspiring college offers a wide range of vocational courses and A levels in the sixth form, aiming to turn out well rounded employable young people prepared for the move into adulthood.
Each student’s Study Programme is designed to get them ready for their next step in life – be it employment, an apprenticeship or university.
Vice Principal Dan Shelley explained: “We want to turn out rounded young people who not only have great exam results and are competent in the skills we are teaching them but who have life skills, can talk to people, hold conversations and can work as part of a team – the key skills employers are looking for.”
Facilities at SCCH are amazing – the hair and beauty training salon would not look out of place on the High Street, the beauty therapy area has its own sauna and hydrotherapy suite. Travel and tourism students have their own fully equipped Airbus A320 fuselage in which to learn flight procedures, giving them an unrivalled edge when it comes to competing for jobs. Amazing pieces of work fill the cleverly named SCCHool of Art, which has an unrivalled reputation for creativity.
Huge windows dominate classrooms creating inspiring learning spaces that are equipped with the most up-to-date resources, there is wireless internet access and 750 workstations/laptops for student use.
SCCH’s main Station Plaza campus, conveniently located next to Hastings Station, is dominated by a huge glass ceilinged atrium, creating an airy, spacious, professional feel. Here students sit chatting, pop up art installations provide a focal point and sports like badminton and table tennis take place.
On site Coast Coffee, which serves Costa coffee, provides a grown up environment for students to meet and relax, the college’s own Subway means students do not have to leave site for fast fresh food, while Dine is the college’s own refectory providing freshly cooked food throughout the college day.
Dine, along with Coast Restaurant which is open to the public providing three course meals for about £10, provide a real life hands-on working environment for students on catering and hospitality courses to develop their skills whilst working alongside professional chefs and front-of-house staff.
Plaza Art Supplies is a one-stop-shop for all students creative needs whilst the college’s very own gym filled with all the latest equipment rivals any facility that would charge far higher prices.
Ore Valley site, where construction, engineering, IT and music technology are based, boasts realistic working areas, amazing workshops and a great central atrium where students put their newly learned skills to the test building a full-sized house. Nearby Automotive Training Centre, supported by Snap On, has all the latest equipment for hands-on training in every aspect of vehicle maintenance and repair.
Not only does the college provide amazing facilities in which to learn but also great links with local, regional and national employers, giving students vital connections in areas where they want to build a career.
Keen to ensure students are learning skills that will make them employable when they leave college, SCCH works closely with employers to provide students with skills relevant to the workplace.
Lots of work experience is organised and companies visit the college to inspire students and help them make the right decisions for their chosen career path. Trips outside of college are key to providing a broad experience for all students – be it a cultural visit or to a construction site, it is always relevant and inspiring for the subject being studied.
Staff at SCCH really do practice what they preach – whilst they are all professionally qualified, staff in vocational areas are also practitioners of what they teach with industry experience and fantastic connections to the outside world.
Welfare of students is a high priority at SCCH as Mr Shelley explained: “We offer an adult environment which is the next step on from school for students but at the same time they still have the support and pastoral care you would expect from a school, whilst encouraging them to become independent learners. We give our students the best progression from school into adulthood, work and higher education.”
Personal tutors guide students through college life, Student Services is always on hand to provide help and guidance, while the Student Council Office is run by the Student President, a member of the student body who knows exactly what their peers are going through.
Learning Resource Centres offer an environment where students can not only use state-of-the-art equipment to help them study but also get help from well trained staff to improve their independent study skills.
SCCH also offers degree level courses in subjects like art and design, accounting, business, computing, engineering, health and social care, teaching and sports and fitness, along with a whole host of apprenticeships for those who want to earn and learn.
