Slalom success for Hurst skiersFebruary 8, 2018
The Hurst ski team finished second overall at the Independent Schools Ski and Snowboard Championships at Les Deux Alpes in December and brought back a gold medal, two silvers and a bronze from two of the three slalom disciplines.
With exceptional conditions on arrival, the Hurst team of 33 racers from Years 7 to Upper Sixth, went straight into two days of training. The programme was tight, with just two days of training before three days of racing, but with a handful of seasoned racers to help with training, progress was good.
On the first day of racing, in good conditions, the Hurst teams quickly found their groove in the giant slalom, as the boys took gold and the girls claimed silver. On the second day of racing, in harsh conditions with heavy snow and winds, the slalom proved tricky, but despite this the girls won silver and the boys took bronze.
The parallel slalom started well on the final day of racing, as Hurst’s first team made it to the semi-finals having seen off their major competitors, but due to an incident on the course the finals did not take place.
Overall, Wycombe Abbey beat Hurst to the title by just one point, a highly commendable effort against formidable opposition.
