Ten years, 25,000 apprentices and counting at Chichester College

Changing lives through learning is at the heart of Chichester College – and over the years thousands of young people have discovered just how true that is.

More than 25,000 apprentices have passed through the doors at Chichester College in the past 10 years.

The news comes during National Apprenticeship Week, which is marking its 10th anniversary, and follows the recent announcement by West Sussex County Council that the number of apprentices in the Coast to Capital area – which covers West Sussex, Brighton and Hove, as well as parts of Surrey and East Sussex – has grown faster than the national average.

Oliver Brown, 22, is five months into a town planning apprenticeship with Chichester District Council, studying at Chichester College one day a week.

He said: “My apprenticeship is completely different to anything I’ve done before.

“Before this I struggled to find something that I enjoyed. I wanted to do something different and being able to combine working with studying was just what I was looking for.

“I’m really enjoying it – the best thing is being able to get practical experience by doing the job.

“It gives you a real sense of worth and I think it helps you to gain maturity, as well as experience.

“It’s a different journey to get to where you want to be.”

Shelagh Legrave OBE, Chichester College Principal, added: “We are extremely proud to have welcomed so many apprentices to our college over the past ten years.

“We have a wealth of experience in apprenticeships, and they are becoming an increasingly popular option for people who are looking to gain qualifications.

“Apprenticeships offer a fantastic opportunity, not just for young people but for those who are either looking to change career or to develop their skills.

“It combines studying at college with on the job experience – essentially allowing apprentices to earn while they learn.

“They also offer enormous benefits to employers, enabling them to fill skills gaps and develop a qualified workforce.”
