Trip to Roman Palace

April 5, 2017

Farlington School’s Prep 4 visited Fishbourne Roman Palace as an introduction to their ‘Romans’ topic.

The size of the plot and the ruins helped the girls to appreciate the grandeur of the Roman palace. They all agreed that it would have been an honour to have been a guest of Tiberius Claudius Cogidubnus (or Togidubnus).

The mosaics, especially the one where Cupid is riding on a dolphin, were beautiful and showed how large the rooms were within the Palace. In the workshop, the girls became ‘slaves’ and were quickly put to work.

They prepared meals in the kitchen, ground the wheat into flour using a millstone, designed and made mosaics, practised writing on a wax tablet and used a spindle to make yarn. They were exhausted by the end of it! It was an enjoyable day and the girls learned so much from their hands-on experiences.

They came away excited to learn more about their topic back in school.
