We love music, any kind of music…

April 6, 2018

More than 60 students at Downlands were on stage, singing and playing their hearts out!  The school hall was buzzing and reverberating with tunes from the 1980s and other wonderful pieces from Orpheus in the Underworld to the Impossible Dream.

The evening kicked off with the Downlands Choir performing “This is Me!” from the Greatest Showman – a great song to get the hall in the mood.  It was followed by some fabulous jazz music from Louis Anderson, the Downlands Jazz Band and Roa Surtie.  There were some lovely solos from Henry Godwin, Josh Hutchinson and Josie Dunn as well as some beautiful violin pieces from students learning the violin with West Sussex Music Service teacher, Mrs Milward at Downlands.

The second half was dedicated to music from the 1980s and started with the Downlands ‘Our House’ band performing a medley of Madness tunes expertly put together by Josh Hutchinson.  Ella Tourle, with the Downlands orchestra, Tommy Ewins and Kyle Barbour on drums performed a great version of ‘Against all Odds’ followed by Sam Wright, Ben Wright, Tommy Ewins and the beautiful voice of Bea Sherman performing a lovely version of ‘Sweet Child of Mine’.

Amazing Year 8 Band ‘Thing of the Swamp’ followed performing ‘Lil Devil’.

No 1980s evening would be complete without Crowded House (performed by Maisie Hudson, Cerys Crouch and Mimi McCartney), The Clash (great version of Should I Say or Should I go performed by Honey Badger), and Soft Cell (Year 7 Band Neon Black with Mr Dechaine on the drums).  Ever popular Year 11 band ‘The Taken’ were up next performing a song from The Smiths.  Year 10 GCSE music students took the stage to perform ‘Take on Me’ by Aha swiftly followed by the Year 11 GCSE Music students performing ‘Everybody Wants to Rule the World’ – fabulous.

The evening finished with two great classics of the 1980s;  ‘Careless Whisper’ and ‘Never Gonna Give You Up’ were performed by all the students who taken part in the evening.  It was a fantastic end to a wonderful showcase of all the brilliantly talented students we are lucky enough to have at Downlands.
