Bede’s opens new Sixth Form Centre

October 8, 2019

Bede’s Senior School in Upper Dicker will unveil its new Sixth Form Centre with an official opening on Wednesday, October 9.

Located at the school overlooking the stunning grounds and lake, Bede’s new Sixth Form Centre is a contemporary, state-of-the-art space which provides a bustling hub for the senior pupils at the heart of the school site. Complete with a coffee bar and individual and group work spaces, the centre is the ideal space for Bede’s Sixth Formers to study, socialise and plan their volunteering and community outreach projects.

Bede’s academic offer is extensive, with over 70 courses in the Sixth Form covering a range of subjects from Art and Design and the sciences, to English Literature and Animal Management. John Tuson, Deputy Head at Bede’s, says, “There are a multitude of possibilities for pupils in the Sixth Form at Bede’s: not just a range of subjects but a range of different course types too – the traditional A Level, vocational BTEC diplomas and academically-focussed Pre-U courses as well.”

Last year’s Upper Sixth achieved 70% A*- B grades at A Level with half of all grades at A*- A, and one in five gaining a clean sweep of the top grades.

Accompanying academics is the Bede’s Diploma, which has been specially designed to extend, enlighten, enhance and enrich every Bede’s Sixth Former through a variety of lectures, workshops and seminars, as well as an additional qualification (the Extended Project Qualification, Arts Award, Level 2 or 3 Award in Sports Leadership or Level 2 in Certificate in Finance), and volunteering opportunities.

Charlotte Sutton, Head of Sixth Form (Engagement), said: “With many Russell Group universities announcing that they will be increasingly calling pupils to interview and placing a greater emphasis on these interviews, we also have refreshed our Higher Education and Careers Programme. Taking place in-timetable, this aspect of the Diploma bolsters the number of hours each pupil will have of interview preparation and work experience.”

The Sixth Form team is also based at the centre and is on hand to answer any questions pupils may have, whether these be about their studies, wellbeing or university applications and career paths.

The Sixth Form team is comprised of: Jason Henham, Head of Sixth Form (Academic); Charlotte Sutton, Head of Sixth Form (Engagement); David Cheshire, Deputy Head of Sixth Form; Paul Gibbs, Director of Higher Education; and Deborah Franks, Head of Careers and Employability.

Charlotte Sutton adds, “We are thrilled to be able to celebrate the opening of our new Sixth Form Centre, which has already received amazing feedback from our Sixth Formers. Special thanks must go to our Estates team for their hard work in renovating the space.”

Parents and students interested in joining Bede’s Sixth Form are invited to our Sixth Form Information Morning on Saturday 12 October at 9.30am. Places are limited – to register, please email
