Bede’s pupils take part in plastic free workshop

May 15, 2019

Bede’s Senior School in Upper Dicker was delighted to welcome representatives from Plastic Free Eastbourne to discuss local environmentally-friendly initiatives with pupils from across the year groups.

Oliver Sterno, Director at Plastic Free Eastbourne, delivered a fascinating talk during which he explained the hazards of single-use plastic and the detrimental effect that its use is having on the environment.

For example, although only used for an average of 12 minutes, a plastic bag takes over 500 years to degrade before breaking down into microplastics that continue to pollute the environment.

Mr Sterno then went on to give helpful tips and advice on how we can reduce the amount of plastic we use, advocating for multi-use over single-use plastic.

Mrs Mary Leggett, Head of Partnerships and Social Responsibility at Bede’s, said: “It was a pleasure to welcome Plastic Free Eastbourne to Bede’s.

“Taking care of the environment is everyone’s responsibility, and this was a fantastic opportunity for our pupils and staff to learn more about this important issue. We look forward to putting some of the plans made into action and taking part in more environmental events.”
