September 10, 2018

After a set of outstanding GCSE results, Burgess Hill Girls has been confirmed as the top school in West Sussex and the top girls’ school in Sussex as a whole.

Of the 300 independent schools which published their GCSE results, Burgess Hill Girls was placed 63rd in the prestigious Daily Telegraph rankings.

Eight Burgess Hill Girls students achieved 100% grades 9-7 (A*/A) in their GCSEs. Star student Selina Wang gained 9 Grade 9s, a further A* and a Distinction in Level 2 Further Mathematics. She was one of only 732 pupils in the whole country to score a clean sweep of grade 9s in all subjects and her remarkableachievement was reported by BBC News.

A further twelve girls achieved 100% Grades 9-7, A*/A. Over half (51%) of all entries were graded 9/8 or A* and a massive 74% of all entries graded 9-7 (old grades A*/A), a 10% increase on last year. 62% of the cohort gained at least seven or more grades 9-7 (old grades A*/A)

Pupils achieved 100% grades 9/8 (old grade A*) in Computer Science, and across all STEM subjects (science, technology, engineering and maths) 79% of all entries were graded 9-7 (old grades A*/A), a 9% increase on last year.

Burgess Hill Girls also achieved highly across a wide range of subjects. 92% of entries in creative subjects were graded 9-7 (old grades A*/A) and in the new, tougher English Language GCSE assessed solely by examination 71% gained grades 9-7. Burgess Hill Girls achieve on average one GCSE grade higher than their baseline indicator, demonstrating the value the school adds to each individual pupil.

Burgess Hill Girls Head Liz Laybourn said that while there was far more to a great education than exam results and rankings, she was delighted that the hard work of pupils – and teachers – had been recognised in the Daily Telegraph analysis.

‘We believe in challenging each individual to be ambitious and achieve the highest grades of which they are capable. Our teachers work hard, going above and beyond, to ensure that girls meet these high standards and reach their full potential in a wide range of subjects, from Computer Science to Art and Design. Yet again, this year’s results prove that the Burgess Hill Girls experience adds significant value to each and every girl.’
